Today, I am going to share my experience with you – the ORIGINAL, REAL, AUTHENTIC Jigarthanda from the founder themselves.

The Ancient Indian City
(The City that Never Sleeps)
Madurai is a VERY important South Indian city, located in Tamil Nadu state.
It is usually known as “Thoonga Nagaram” in Tamil (city that never sleeps).
Madurai is very famous for it’s RICH Indian Tradition and History going back to thousands of years.
Today we will focus on Madurai’s BEST DESSERT – Jigarthanda – a summer drink which literally translates to “Cold Heart”.
Keeping your heart (or body) cool is necessary to beat the summer heat. Hence the name.
Not only for summer, but this is also an all-season dessert drink.
The “Famous Jigarthanda”

There are so many Jigarthanda shops all over India now, that the Real one is difficult to identify.
The ACTUAL name of the shop is “Famous Jigarthanda“

This is a small shop, located in a corner of the road.

This shop is always crowded. People of all ages visit this shop and enjoy the drink. This one is a QUICK REFRESHER!
This particular location is very Famous because of Madurai Meenakshiamman Temple situated nearby.
An ancient historical temple known for it’s complicated architecture and 1000 pillars!!!

Jigarthanda Ice Cream
“This ice cream is homemade” – as per the owners of the shop.
As per my experience of having it, it felt like it was a combination of vanilla ice cream (base) and caramel syrup. This combination gave a slight orange shade.
Menu Options
Jigarthanda Topped with Basundi/Basanthi:
This Basundi variety is thicker and creamier than the actual Jigarthanda.
The quantity of “malai” (or lactoderm), also known as “paal aadai” (in Tamil), is found more in Basundi Jigarthanda when compared to the regular one.
Mouth Watering Experience!
The “Famous Jigarthanda” drink is an absolutely Delicious, Yummy and Tasty (you name it!) one.
You don’t get to taste this kind of dessert elsewhere!
If you’re a foodie and a traveller, then travel to India -> Tamil Nadu -> Madurai. You will never regret it.
Not only Jigarthanda, but you can also explore the Rich Heritage of Madurai in all its glory.
You have plenty of food options and restaurants in Madurai which are Authentic and Traditional.
Madurai is especially known for its idly (a soft one).

Murugan Idli Kadai Jigarthanda
We also wanted to taste another Jigarthanda variant – the Murugan Idli Shop Jigarthanda.
This Murugan Idli Kadai is also located around the Madurai Meenakshiamman Temple.
I along with my husband caught an auto from Vilakkuthoon and went to Murugan Idli Kadai.

This Jigarthanda was also good, but not on par with the “Famous Jigarthanda”. But this is a very good alternative to the original one.
This Jigarthanda seemed a bit bright orange.
We also tasted the “Podi Idli”. It was MIND-BLOWING!!! Murugan Idli Shop is famous for its Idlis and Chutney varieties.
Conclusion:
Jigarthanda satisfies you totally. You are refreshed and happy at the same moment.
The unique taste it brings to the table is simply awesome. And the pricing is also cheap.
